Don’t you hate it when need to adjust the volume on your computer only to find that the icon is missing from your taskbar? Here’s a quick tip that I thought I would write since it happens to me all the time! The process for getting back your volume icon is not very complicated, so here it goes! It does, however, differ depending on what operating system you’re running. In this article, I’ll mention Windows XP and Windows 7/8.
Windows XP Volume Icon

- You may follow the steps mentioned below to mute the microphone. First, open Control Panel. Look for Sound and open it. Then at Playback tab, right click on Speakers then click on Properties. Click on Levels tab, and then you may be able to view Microphone. Click on it and you’ll now get your Microphone mute.
First, click on Start and then Control Panel to get to the computer settings:
Next, click on the Sounds and Audio Devices icon in the Control Panel. If you don’t see the icon, you may be in Category View. Switch to Classic View by clicking the first option at the top left.
Personally, I like Classic View better since it’s easier to get to what you want quickly. Once you open the dialog, you should already be on the Volume tab.
You’ll notice the “Place volume icon in the taskbar” option is either checked or unchecked. If it’s already checked and the icon is not showing up, you need to uncheck the box, and then click Apply. Re-check the box and then click Apply again. Now your icon should appear in the taskbar.
Windows 7/8 Volume Icon
In Windows 7 and Windows 8, the taskbar got a huge revamp and so the process is completely different. Also, in Windows 7/8, taskbar icons can now be combined. This is to basically save space and make your taskbar look less cluttered. It’s nice, but your volume icon may actually just be in the grouped icons rather than it’s own icon on the taskbar, so make sure to check that first. You can always drag the icon out back onto the main section of the taskbar.
If you go to the Control Panel and click on Sounds in Windows 7/8, you won’t see any checkbox for adding the icon to the taskbar, but instead all the audio inputs and outputs on your system.
This actually makes sense because the taskbar icon should be controlled by the taskbar settings. In Windows 7/8, to hide or view the volume icon, you need to customize the taskbar. To do that, you simply right-click anywhere on the taskbar and choose Properties.
Now, you need to click on the Customize button under Notification area.
In the Notification Area Icons dialog box, there are two things you have to check. First, make sure the volume icon behavior is set to Show icon and notifications.
Then, towards the bottom of the screen, go ahead and click on Turn system icons on or off.
Make sure the volume icon is set to On.
That’s it! Sometimes this happens a lot, especially after you restart your computer or log off. If the sound icon keeps disappearing over and over again, you need to update the driver for your sound card. Volume Control icon does not appear in the notification area in Windows 7 or in vista
If you have a PC running Windows 7 or vista and if Volume Control icon do not appear in the notification area in the lower-right corner of the screen, then do the following.
- Click Start, type Customize icons and then click Customize icons on the task bar.
- Click Turn system icons on or off, and then set Volume, Network, and Power System to On.
- Make sure that the behavior for Power, Network, and Volume are set correctly, and then click OK.
When you install windows 7 on your PC, the check boxes for the volume control, Network, and Power System icons are selected, by default, on the Notification Area tab of the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box. You may sometimes notice that they are not selected. The network, volume, and power features function correctly even though their associated icons do not appear in the notification area.Are you wondering why does this happen?
When you first start a computer (new computer), the operating system typically runs start up service initializations that may take from one to six hours to finish, depending on which applications are preloaded on the computer. you must make sure that you give the operating system sufficient time to finish these start up service initializations before you shut down or restart the computer. The above issue usually occurs if the PC is shut down or restarted before windows 7 or vista has finished initializing all the background services, before it is restarted.
If you gave your computer, running windows 7 or vista, enough time to finish the start up service initializations before you restarted it, and one or more of the system icons like volume control icon etc. still do not appear in the notification area after the restart, you can make them reappear by deleting two sub-keys from the registry.
Microsoft has offered a “Fix it” to do this fix automatically. click this Microsoft fix it link, click Run in the File Download dialog box, and follow the steps in the wizard. Though the wizard is in English, the fix works for windows in other languages too.
If you are not on the computer that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix, from the above link, to a flash drive or to a CD, and then you can run it on the computer that has the problem.
If you prefer to edit the registry manually, then follow the steps mentioned below.But you must back up the registry before you do the edits as you may need it to restore the registry if a problem occurs due to incorrect editing.
- 1. Click Start , type regedit in the Start Search box or the Serach programs and files box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
- 2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
- 3. In the Details pane of windows registry, click the IconStreams registry entry.
- 4. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
- 5. In the Details pane of windows registry, click the PastIconsStream registry entry.
- 6. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
- 7. Exit Registry Editor.
- 8. Restart the Explorer.exe process. To do these, follow these steps:
- Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
- On the Processes tab in Task Manager, click the explorer.exe process, and then click End Process two times.
- On the File menu, click New Tasks (Run), type explorer, and then click OK.
- Exit Task Manager.
If you are running windows 7, then carry out the following steps after making the registry fix detailed above.
- Click Start, type Customize icons and then click Customize icons on the task bar.
- Click Turn system icons on or off, and then set Volume, Network, and Power System to On.
